Palouse Heritage Silverhull Buckwheat produces distinctive triangular seeds rich in complex carbohydrates and gluten free that have been used since ancient times for flatbreads, pancakes, and the hearty dish known as kasha. Buckwheat is not actually a cereal grain, but a member of thepolygonaciae family botanically related to rhubarb, and derives its name from medieval GermanBuchweizen (“beech wheat”) for the seeds resemblance to miniature beech tree nuts. Native to Asia, buckwheat spread across the continent and was introduced by Greek traders to southeastern Europe by the 8th century A.D. to become an important staple crop. Many Russian-German immigrant farmers to the Pacific Northwest hailed from the Volga village of Walter, located at a place known in Russian as Grechnaya Luka—“Buckwheat Bend.”

Buckwheat has no gluten, so this flour is a popular flour choice for those who are gluten-sensitive.

Note:  Our non-gluten flours are all milled in a facility that processes and packages wheat products.
